Plenty of Toronto contractors will tell you that their best jobs come from word of mouth, and that is often true. But what happens after someone gets your name from a neighbour? They look you up. If they cannot find anything, or find only a phone number with no context, some will move on to the next name on the list.
What the check looks like
A homeowner in the Beaches or in Etobicoke who has heard good things about a carpenter wants to see some of the work. A roofer's clients want to know the company is insured and covers their area. Someone calling an electrician wants to understand what kinds of jobs are taken on. A plumber's page should say whether emergency calls are handled and when.
This does not take much. A short description, the neighbourhoods you work in, a handful of photos of finished jobs, and a phone number at the top are enough. Add details of any licensing or insurance that applies to your trade, and leave out anything you cannot prove.
The page also works after the job: it is an easy link to send a friend who asks for a recommendation. A free business site is a low-risk way to try it.
